Joseph Violaris was elected as Kyrenia’s mayor in exile on Sunday evening, beating his opponent Odysseas Patsalides to win the mayoral seat.
Violaris will substitute the retiring Rita Elissaiou Komodiki.
He has received a complete of 65.9 per cent of the votes counted to this point, with 95.5 per cent of votes having been counted.
Turnout within the election was 44.3 per cent, with 2,303 voters having registered.
When he introduced his candidacy in April, he stated it was a “image of the battle for liberation from the occupying military and the settlers, and our return to our properties and our properties with all human rights assured”.
He added that these rights must be assured “simply as they’re assured within the European Union, and simply as each European citizen has the appropriate to maneuver and revel in his personal property all through Europe.”
He went on to say that the Kyrenia municipality “shouldn’t be a municipality which can take care of cleanliness, footpaths, and permits.
“It’s a municipality which is solely involved with shedding gentle on this concern so we will return to our beloved city.”
