The Knowledge Safety Fee (DPC) has introduced its last determination following an inquiry into Meta Platforms Eire Restricted (MPIL). This inquiry was launched in April 2019, after Meta notified the DPC that it had inadvertently saved sure passwords of social media customers in ‘plaintext’ on its inner methods (ie with out cryptographic safety or encryption).
The DPC submitted a draft determination to the opposite Involved Supervisory Authorities throughout the EU/EEA in June 2024, as required underneath Article 60 of the Common Knowledge Safety Regulation (GDPR). No objections to the draft determination have been raised by the opposite authorities.
The choice, which was made by the Commissioners for Knowledge Safety, Dr Des Hogan and Dale Sunderland, and notified to MPIL yesterday 26 September, features a reprimand and a wonderful of €91million.

Deputy Commissioner on the DPC, Graham Doyle stated: “It’s extensively accepted that consumer passwords shouldn’t be saved in plaintext, contemplating the dangers of abuse that come up from individuals accessing such information. It should be borne in thoughts, that the passwords the topic of consideration on this case, are significantly delicate, as they’d allow entry to customers’ social media accounts.”
Meta informed Reuters it has no proof that any of the uncovered passwords have been misused.
