The Italian authorities freed Iranian engineer Abedini Najafabadi Mohammad on Sunday and he flew house to Iran quickly after, ANSA information company reported.
Abedini was arrested on 16 December by the Italian authorities at Milan Malpensa airport beneath a US warrant and had been held in jail within the metropolis.
The US Justice Division accused Abedini, together with one other Iranian citizen, of supplying Iran with drone know-how used within the January 2024 assault on a US outpost in Jordan, which killed three American troopers.
Many political commentators imagine a deal could have been struck whereby Italy promised to free Abedini if Iran launch the Italian journalist Cecilia Sala from jail, which Tehran did final week.
Nonetheless, neither the US, nor Italy, nor Iran have confirmed whether or not a deal was in truth struck.
Three days after his arrest Cecilia Sala, a contract journalist with Il Foglio newspaper and Chora Media, was arrested in Tehran on prices of violating the legal guidelines of the Islamic Republic. After 21 days of imprisonment in Evin jail, Sala was freed and returned to Italy on Wednesday 8 January.
