A van driver has suffered critical head accidents after a boulder smashed by his windscreen and hit him after it was dropped from a bridge, police mentioned.
The rock was dropped from the crossing over the A617, close to Hemsley Highway, Rainworth, at about 22:00 GMT on Friday, Nottinghamshire Police mentioned.
The 26 year-old was driving a silver Transit van when it went by the windscreen.
“We’re taking this senseless and abhorrent act extraordinarily severely,” Supt Heather Maelor mentioned.
The person was taken to hospital with critical accidents and the highway remained closed on Saturday morning.
The closure on the A617 was between the roundabout at Kirklington Highway and the junction with the A6191.
Any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage had been urged to come back ahead by Supt Maelor.
